"Upon Thomas Müller's arrival ..." - Humorous comment by Kiel player Holtby regarding Bayern
In the top-of-the-table match within the second division, Holstein Kiel tied 1:1 with Fortuna Dusseldorf, guaranteeing their first venture into the Bundesliga. Excited spectators flooded the field and stands as soon as the whistle blew, signaling the end of the game.
In the jubilation, midfielder Lewis Holtby (33) held a pint and declared, "I think we're Bayern Munich's next opponents. There's been a blizzard game here previously. If Thomas Muller returns, he'll experience flashbacks." The international player continued, "And I'll shadow Harry Kane."
Referring to the cup shock in 2021, Kiel defeated Bayern Munich 8:7 (1:1, 2:2, 2:2) on penalties in January. Thomas Müller didn't take the loss well and reacted critically in an interview on ARD after the final whistle.
Now, Holtby's playful prediction...
Nevertheless, the focus remained on the promotion celebrations.
"I'm so appreciative to be part of this momentous accomplishment with Holstein Kiel," said Holtby passionately. "Kiel has typically been the subject of headlines in the region. Now, soccer has contributed to that. I'm incredibly proud to be a part of this story."
Similarly, coach Marcel Rapp (45) expressed his delight, "It's indescribable to witness the stadium's atmosphere and the city's excitement. Enthralling. I also believe we earned our spot in the Bundesliga."
Kiel has lost out to VfL Wolfsburg and 1. FC Köln in the promotion relegation play-offs in 2018 and 2021 respectively. But next season, the "Storks" will be the first Bundesliga club from Schleswig-Holstein.
The head of the state parliament, Kristina Herbst (CDU), sent her congratulations to the celebratory group, "What a game and what an unforgettable moment. I'm getting goosebumps."
