Emergency response rehearsal in Lower Saxony: Around 800 emergency personnel from Lower Saxony participated in a significant drill in the county of Bentheim recently. The drill, which took place in Nordhorn, simulated large-scale incidents with numerous injuries and fatalities. Emergency services such as the police, firefighters, and rescue teams prepared for future scenarios. Marco Ellermann, Osnabrück police spokesperson, said the exercises centered on life-threatening scenarios, like potential terrorist attacks during European elections.
Special police forces from Lower Saxony, federal police, fire stations, rescue teams, the THW, DLRG, and the Euregio Clinic were also involved. The drill also included about 100 people who were made to act as realistic victims. Ellermann assured that Nordhorn residents were not affected as most of the exercise occurred on private property.
Lower Saxony's Interior Minister, Daniela Behrens (SPD), observed the drill and emphasized that the state's threat level remains high, although there are no specific warnings of any immediate attacks. "Regardless of the lack of concrete evidence of impending attacks, being vigilant and alert is essential," she added. Therefore, it's crucial for the Lower Saxony police to practice various scenarios like the one in Nordhorn.
At the end of the exercise, the organizers were satisfied with the outcome. The different agencies' security mechanisms had aligned effectively, and their joint cooperation was found to be excellent. Ellermann stated that the purpose of these exercises is to boost their confidence in action, deepen cooperation between agencies, improve communication, and build networks.
