Ponder over whether you are worthy of this - HSV captain candidly discusses defeat in promotion match

During the halftime, one of the central defenders got injured and had to be substituted. After the game ended with a disappointing loss, the defender expressed his thoughts plainly in a no-nonsense manner. He spoke about the poor overall performance of the season.

Schonlau: "Throughout the season, we couldn't maintain a consistently high level of play. If I'm being honest, we didn't lose anything major in terms of position in the standings."

Despite the poor performance, the Hamburg fans cheered and congratulated their team at the end of the match. The players, however, looked baffled by the fans' show of support.

Schonlau: "This reaction is far from ordinary, far from what one would expect. The dedication of the fans is truly admirable. As players, we can't help but feel a little awkward when we see their support in such circumstances. They deserve so much better, but we let them down again."

So, what's next for Schonlau? Having failed to secure promotion with HSV for the third time, and with a contract that ties him to the club until 2026, he seems to be uncertain about his future.

Schonlau: "Right now, I'm not thinking about that. We'll be analyzing what went wrong, planning for the future, and trying to improve. But there's no denying that things didn't go our way this season. We'll have to wait and see how things unfold next season."

Season will be over soon, but there will be new challenges to face and new goals to achieve. Despite the disappointment, Schonlau and his teammates will continue to fight and work hard to make their supporters proud.
