On Thursday, a 63-year-old man managed to escape while under supervision during an escorted exit. He utilized a classic trick by heading to the shopping center of Leer and requested to use the restroom in a bakery. With only a chaplain from Meppen Prison accompanying him, the man was able to make his escape easily.
The prisoner, who had previously served jail time for fraud, rape, and coercion, was apprehended two days later in the Netherlands near Zwolle.
How did the police track him down?
The man's carelessness led to his capture. After escaping, he went to a car rental company and rented a car with his EC card and ID card. Fortunately, the police were monitoring the prisoner's account and quickly picked up the trail.
The Dutch authorities were alerted, and using their automatic license plate recognition system, police officers located the car at the border. The fugitive was then arrested. He now awaits extradition back to Meppen.
