Volland and Company - How does astrology relate to the Union's turmoil?
Following the last-moment victory against Freiburg, resulting in a 2:1 win, Union must take stock of their disastrous season that started in the Champions League and almost led to relegation.
Primarily, those responsible, including president Dirk Zingler (59) and squad planner Ruhnert, need to question how their player recruitment impacted the decline.
They purposefully decided heading into the season to elevate Union's status by attracting international sports stars - and they were willing to shell out for it. The process commenced in the winter of 2023, marked by the almost transfer of former Real Madrid player Isco (31).
The acquisition of Bonucci, Gosens, and Volland didn't benefit Union Berlin in terms of sporting performance
In the summer, three high-profile players were brought in: Leonardo Bonucci (36), Robin Gosens (29), and Kevin Volland (31). However, these star signings didn't yield any notable sporting achievement. There was no doubt within the team about their dedication and commitment, yet they failed to elevate Union to a higher level. Bonucci, who left after less than six months, is a case in point.
These very players could pose a problem now for Union in their desperate bid for turnaround. Not only do they have long contracts (Volland until 2026, Gosens until 2027), but they're also earning a decent income, taking away resources needed to secure their standing in the league next season.
There's no potential buyer for Volland spotted. The league top scorer with six goals, Gosens, has been connected repeatedly with Italian clubs, and reports indicate Lazio Roma are keen. However, it is uncertain whether a multimillion-dollar deal, as Union initially paid to Inter Milan in the summer, can be arranged.
Gosens reflected on the season on Instagram: "Let's not pretend - we all had different expectations before the season. But nothing's predetermined in soccer. That's why we all adore this game. But it can also be incredibly harsh."
Via social media, Gosens addressed the fans: "Thank you for an unforgettable season. My first in the Bundesliga. And it was a difficult one."
Could this season also mark Gosens' final stint at Union?
