Following the stadium controversy - Hooligans from Cologne could face fines and prohibition from entering sports arenas.
During Cologne's game against Union Berlin (3:2), fans made crude and offensive remarks about Cologne's Mayor, Henriette Reker (69), using a indecent banner in the south stand. Consequentially, the Mayor pressed charges against the individuals involved. Officials are currently conducting an investigation, reviewing photos and videos from the stadium, and conducting interviews with involved parties.
Possible Penalties
Cologne's football club has stated their support for the authorities, intimating that those responsible may face hefty fines, as well as stadium bans.
Evaluating Cologne's Decisions
Cologne's president, Werner Wolf (69) says, "The FC will always be a club where criticism is encouraged, as long as it stays within boundaries. This banner, however, crossed the line and needs to be explicitly criticized."
One might wonder if Cologne's stance is enough to satisfy the demands of justice and societal norms. With the ongoing investigation, Cologne and its board must consider whether a shift in approach towards their Ultras and the Horde may be required.
Despite the potential consequences if they were to implement a firmer stance, namely risking losing the support of the Ultras and possibly their authority, Cologne's managers seem hesitant to take a stronger action. Could this be an indicator that a change in direction may be necessary in managing the Ultras?
