Union Endures Terrifying Season - Honest Reflections on Gosens' Euro 2021 Elimination
Following Union Berlin's win against Freiburg (2:1) on the last matchday, Robin Gosens (29) reflect on his first Bundesliga season and his experience. On his LinkedIn profile, Gosens states, "This past Bundesliga season was incredibly intense for me. We all expected different outcomes at the start of the year; we must be honest about that."
After transferring from Champions League runners-up Inter Milan, Gosens found himself in a relegation battle with Union until the season's end. Gosens admitted, "During the season, people asked me if I regretted the move. Even though I imagined a different scenario: a relegation battle until the final matchday."
Gosens' lackluster performance with Union, where he was their top scorer with six goals, cost him a spot in the DFB squad for the European Championship. He voiced his disappointment, "Finding out I won't be participating in the home European Championship and having my childhood dream shattered is a significant blow. I'm also unhappy about not being able to continue Union's success story this season."
Despite these setbacks, Gosens finds comfort in his move to Union. He explains, "I've grown tremendously as a person and player, developed more resilience, made new acquaintances, joined the Bundesliga professionally, had my second child in Berlin, and avoided what seemed to be a certain relegation."
While he may not have represented his nation, Gosens has no regrets about his time in Berlin. "I have no regrets whatsoever. Even if some people suggest I do. The vacation will help me process everything better. I'm then looking forward to the European Championships. As a fan."
It is uncertain what Gosens future involves, as he was recently rumored to be linked to Lazio Rome by Italian press.
