Hollywood Celebrity Targeted in Bellagio Casino Robbery in Las Vegas
When poker enthusiasts and gambling lovers gather in a casino, they all have the same goal in mind: a comfortable and thrilling evening where, with a hint of luck, they might even leave the venue with a nice chunk of money. Sadly, this scenario didn't unfold at the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas on Tuesday, as an armed thief barged in and stole a whopping $35,000 from a cashier - just like in the movie "Ocean's Eleven," which was also filmed at this very casino.
Per witnesses and law enforcement, the armed man walked into the Bellagio Casino - a hotspot for gamblers - around 3:45 p.m. local time on a mission to steal it. With a mask on, he made his way to one of the cash registers without creating a fuss. At gunpoint, he ordered the cashier to hand over the money from the tills. According to the heute.at magazine, the cashier quickly and calmly complied and gave the man a total of $35,000 without putting up a fight. The robber then nonchalantly walked out of the casino, not even giving the guests a second glance - many of whom commended his stealthy behaviour. The culprit remains at large.
How did security miss this?
The man managed to escape with the stolen money because the Bellagio security team didn't interfere. The luxury resort in Las Vegas aims for a less risky situation, meaning they don't want to put the guests in harm's way. This is the reason why not many visitors were aware of the robbery. It wasn't until the police arrived that the news spread.
MGM Resorts International, the company that owns the Bellagio, provided the cops with the video footage for a swift capture of the perpetrator. The thief is clearly visible on the surveillance tapes, mask or not. The Las Vegas police have released some of the footage and are asking the public for help.
Hollywood celebrity James Woods was present that day
It's quite a coincidence that Hollywood actor James Woods was playing poker at the Bellagio on that particular day. Known for movies like Scary Movie 2, John Q and White House Down, the now 70-year-old man had no idea he'd be part of a real-life robbery while gambling. His tweet about the incident also praised the professionalism of the security personnel present. He didn't realise what happened until he found out later.
Hollywood blockbuster Ocean's Eleven comes to life in real life
The 2001 hit starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Matt Damon saw a group of friends plot to rob the vault under the Bellagio casino hotel. Filmed at the actual Bellagio Hotel, it's hard not to draw parallels between the movie and the actual robbery. Could the robber have been influenced by the film? The irony is that Ocean's Eleven, the casino robbery film, has become synonymous with actual robberies in Las Vegas. But unlike the movie, the perpetrator acted alone and had no accomplices.
Yet robberies like these are always shattering, for both the guests and the employees. As you never know how the robber might react or what he's capable of doing to get what he wants, they're always an unpleasant experience. Fortunately, this time nobody was harmed.
