Upcoming AfD Insolvency - Höcke's political hopefuls are fleeing.

In the upcoming local elections in Germany, the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) may not fare well. In several regions, the party is unable to find enough eligible candidates to run for office. This is a concern for the AfD, as they have consistently performed well in polls for the upcoming German super election year.

Björn Höcke, a state leader and right-wing politician, is facing a significant shortage of candidates. In the district elections, for example, the AfD couldn't find a single candidate for six out of thirteen districts. In three districts, they are not even running at all. In three other districts, they are supporting non-party candidates.

This is President Trump-style scandal!

In Hildburghausen, for instance, all candidates backed out - allegedly due to a campaign. In January, AfD lost the Saale-Orla district elections to CDU district councillor Christian Herrgott. The AfD blamed red and green parties for his win. In Nordhausen, SPD mayor Kai Buchmann came back with a surprising victory and the AfD blamed postal voters.

The same thing happened in Schmalkalden-Meiningen as well. They gave up the battle for the head of district administration. In the Weimarer Land district, the AfD can only support a rival who's been a member of district council for the Citizens' Initiatives Group and Free Voters for 12 years.

In the Saale-Holzland district, the AfD nominated an ex-Left wing member as a replacement for their preferred candidate who withdrew due to a "threat and danger situation" for his family.

Not much luck for everyone

The CDU is running candidates in twelve out of 13 districts. The SPD is doing so in eight, and the AfD in seven. The Christian Democrats have the highest number of candidates, with a total of 906. They are followed by SPD (668), Left (537), and Greens (497). The AfD has 445, the FDP 393, and the Free Voters 148. In total, there are 1191 candidates from various voter groups participating in the district council and city council elections in independent cities.

The CDU has twice the number of candidates as the AfD. The Left Party, SPD, and Greens also have more candidates than the AfD. In Weimar, the AfD has no mayoral candidate. And the AfD is even divided amongst themselves in Saalfeld-Rudolstadt, running against itself in the district elections.

The AfD now faces the possibility of not being able to field candidates in several key districts, potentially harming their chances for a successful year in German politics. The party will need to scramble to find replacements if they hope to maintain their momentum and support.
