Collision occurs on A1 roadway - Highway Closure Due to Hazardous Truck Accident

Around 10:20 a.m. on a Wednesday morning, a Romanian truck driver, aged 55, plowed into the end of a traffic jam near a roadworks site on the A1, close to the Groß Ippener junction. The driver, who was hauling a tank container, apparently didn't notice the traffic jam ahead. He didn't apply the brakes, and his 40-ton truck slammed into the Polish truck in front of him.

A number of people were hurt in this accident, some quite badly, and the driver found himself trapped inside the wreckage.

Potassium nitrate involved; first-aider injured

The situation worsened when it was discovered that one of the trucks involved was carrying hazardous materials. Luckily, there were no leaks from the potassium nitrate - a white powder. Initially, the emergency services were unaware of what this substance was, which added to their challenges.

A large team of firefighters and paramedics arrived at the scene to attend to the injured and to free the trapped driver. While tending to the trapped driver, a first-aider was injured, suffering cuts after smashing the window of his cab. A rescue helicopter also landed on the motorway.

The police have launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The damage to the two articulated lorries was significant, estimated to be around €150,000.

Throughout the day, the A1, heading towards Osnabrück, will likely remain completely closed.

Divert to A28 at Stuhr and A29 to Ahlhorn junctions

Southern bound traffic is being redirected onto the A28 at the Stuhr interchange. It is strongly recommended that drivers take a long detour using the A29 to resume their journey on the A1 at the Ahlhorn junction.

The secondary roads across the country are not equipped to handle large volumes of traffic, so it will not be possible to reopen the motorway until the two wrecked articulated lorries have been cleared and the road has been cleaned up.
