Highlights from the PokerStars Championship Monte Carlo event
The well-renowned Monte Carlo Casino at the Côte d'Azur has been the host of numerous poker events sponsored by PokerStars. Some of these include the Grand Finals of the European Poker Tour. From April 25th to May 5th, 2017, top-ranking poker players had an opportunity to compete against each other in the PokerStars Championship.
After tournaments in Bahamas, Panama, and Macau, this series found its way to Europe at the end of April. Over a span of ten days, the casino offered an astonishing 70 diverse tournaments. The series began with a "Single Re-Entry Shotclock Event." There were also two high-roller competitions, "High Roller" with a buy-in of €25,750 and "Super High Roller" with a whopping €100,000 buy-in. Each of the winners were offered a guaranteed €1 million prize. However, the series also facilitated competitions for players of lower stakes, such as the "PokerStars Cup" (€440) and "PokerStars National Championship Event." The sponsor, PokerStars, expected a payout of €30 million in total prize money. The highlight, undoubtedly, was the PSC Main Event, with a buy-in of €5,300, and ran from April 29th to May 5th.
Raffaele Sorrentino emerges victorious in the Main Event, surpassing Andreas Klatt
Andreas Klatt, a German poker player hailing from Tübingen, made waves on April 30th by winning the "PokerStars National Championship." This victory offered him a boost as he participated in the main event's final table. The first-day chip leader was none other than the Frenchman, Michael Kolkowicz. Additionally, Diego Zeiter from Switzerland, Raffaele Sorrentino from Italy, and both Andrey Bondar and Maxim Panyak from Russia joined Kolkowicz at the final table.
Zeiter from Switzerland was the first to leave, securing the 108,300 euros in 6th place. Kolkowicz, who started with 4.6 million chips and managed to hold more than 8 million chips at times, eventually found himself behind Sorrentino and had to settle for 5th place. The Russians Maxim Panyak and Andrey Bondar took home €198,095 and €271,500 respectively, for 4th and 3rd place finishes.
In the heads-up, Klatt and Sorrentino reached a deal where they both received €400,000 in prize money. The championship was then played out. After 29 hands, Klatt received two queens, while Sorrentino was dealt aces. He promptly went all-in, Klatt instantly called, and it came down to a showdown. The flop consisted of 8 of diamonds, 2 of hearts, and 2 of spades, the turn a king of diamonds, and the river a 2 of diamonds. Sorrentino emerged victorious, bagging €466,714 in prize money. He expressed his excitement upon winning:
"I'm so happy. A dream has come true! I've been contemplating this victory for about a week now. Every day, I've been getting closer to my goal."
German poker players prosper in other Monte Carlo tournaments
German poker players left a significant impact on other events in Monte Carlo. Julian Stuer, for instance, took the victory in the "High Roller" category, nabbing the €1,015,000 prize money and the first PokerStars Championship title of his career. In the "Single Day High-Roller Event," the German Phillip Gruissem secured the victory along with a reward of €485,135. In the "Super High Roller Event," Steffen Sontheimer and Ole Schemion made it to the top 6, yet it was the American Bryn Kenney who reigned overall, winning €1,784,500, a sum that's quite frequent in local events, but less so at high roller online casinos.
The PokerStars Championship at the Monte Carlo Casino attracted a fair amount of unexpected winners. The majority of these tournaments were streamed live or could be followed through a live ticker. It's no surprise that this series is amongst the most essential ones, bringing large prize funds. For a full list of winners and their prize pools, visit the PokerStars Live results page. The events continue at the Sochi casino from May 20th to 31st, followed by another tournament in Barcelona, but not until August.
