Employment sector - Higher unemployment rates observed in Hamburg.

Unemployment numbers in Hamburg remain nearly unchanged. In April, 87,466 individuals were jobless in the city, states the Hamburg Employment Agency on Tuesday - a 110 person increase over March. The unemployment rate remains at 8.0%, but it's higher than the 7.3% seen a year prior.

"Unemployment in Hamburg has been above 87,000 for four consecutive months," comments Sönke Fock, the head of the employment agency, "This year's expected April recovery is slightly below projections." Over half of Hamburg's unemployed people lack a formal educational qualification.

7031 positions were lost in April, which marks 14.8% more than in March. Simultaneously, 11% more (6250 people) gained employment following March's 618 new hires. There are plenty of vacancies in Hamburg. In April, 3038 jobs were listed, a 28.7% surge compared to March.

Young people aged 15 to 20 in Hamburg have seen a significant decrease in unemployment numbers. April recorded 1101 young job-seekers, compared to 1239 in March (a 11.1% drop).

The Hamburg training market shows a 1.5% increase in available training places for 2023/24. Fock mentions that 9090 positions are available, 8965 of which are company-run roles. "Despite the rise in training places," he adds, "there's a simultaneous increase in unfilled vacancies." The sectors with the most training opportunities? Retail and the automotive industry.

A positive note comes from the registered applicants for training, which experienced a reversal trend after a multi-year downward slide. "For the first time in five years, Hamburg's training market is registering positive figures," Fock reveals, adding that 5044 applicants were registered in April. This data comes from the Federal Employment Agency, which only had figures available up to April 15.
