Leak of gas at Saarstahl - Heritage location and grocery store emptied!
To prevent any potential risks, the Völklingen Ironworks World Heritage Site and the adjacent Kaufland area were emptied out. The area's traffic was rerouted as well.
Saarstahl's representative, Martin Reinicke, stated, "The damaged gas line runs from the gas tank to the furnaces in the rolling mill. The leak was fixed by the plant fire team, and gas necessary for production was supplied through alternative pipelines."
The gas spread rapidly from the company grounds across the massive parking lot at the World Heritage Site, traveling towards Kaufland, according to measurements taken by the fire department in the steelworks' external region in Saarland.
As a result, the municipal fire department made the decision to evacuate inhabitants within approximately 300 meters of the incident location.
A total of 30 employees at the plant had to temporarily cease their work during the current operation. Truck traffic was redirected through different plant entrances. The evacuation perimeter was finalized at around 1:30 PM.
Reinicke: "No one was hurt, and the public was never in any danger. Due to the occurrences, there will be increased gas release in the steelworks for the following days."
