Prior to the demotion game against Freiburg, - Help is now being given to Union coach Grote.
To have a shot at staying in the Bundesliga, Union must win their final regular season game against Freiburg on Saturday (3:30pm, Sky). Interim coach Marco Grote (51) seeks to mentally prepare his team for the potential high-stakes showdown and has turned to sports psychologist Renate Eichenberger (51) for assistance. Eichenberger has been working closely with Union and is sought after in the lead up to the last relegation match.
Grote says, "She's a point of contact for me and can be consulted by anyone. The way I work as a team player, I incorporate all advice, including from Renate. She's a crucial part of the team."
Grote has frequent interactions with players
Grote trusts his team's capabilities but acknowledges that it's more than just talent: "They're talented players; I know that. It's not as simple as just laying on the couch and it works. It's all about belief and confidence. You have to instill that in them."
Consequently, Grote and his staff held several individual conversations with the players. "Talking and opening up straightforwardly and honestly is beneficial. We talk daily to revitalize ourselves and devise a plan."
One player required special attention. The announcement of the DFB squad for the European Championship prompted Robin Gosens' (29) removal from the tournament. Grote commented, "We discussed the European Championship. It's understandable and human that he's dismayed. He'll cope with it. He'll offer every ounce of energy he has on the field this weekend."
Despite acknowledging the challenges, Grote conveys a sense of optimism, "I can sense and perceive the faith and determination in training. I try to emulate what else is needed. I hold strong confidence in these players."
Grote guarantees, "We'll demonstrate the spark as Union beyond the 90th minute to securely steer the game in our favor."
Thus, Union can achieve the rescue on Saturday.
