Harry Reid's sibling taken into custody over DUI and battery charges.

Senator Harry Reid from Nevada has been without vision in his right eye since the start of this year, despite attempts to restore it through surgery. The cause of his injury was said to be a workout mishap on New Year's Day, where exercise bands broke, causing him to fall and injure his ribs and face.

However, there has been doubt regarding this account, and a new occurrence may have brought those speculations back to the forefront. Reid's 73-year-old sibling, Larry Reid, was apprehended for charges of DUI and assaulting a police officer. The apprehension by Nevada police occurred midday on Monday while traveling between Boulder City and Searchlight.

Trooper Loy Hixson of the Patrol mentioned that an officer saw Larry Reid's SUV stuck in the dirt median, ultimately leading to the arrest. Additional accusations involved not wearing a seat belt and having a gun in his possession while intoxicated.

Reid's office has not commented much about the incident, other than confirming Larry Reid's identity as the Senator's brother and referring to the incident as a "private matter."

The recent arrest has revived the rumor that a dispute might have played a part in Reid's eye injury. There has been resistance from the Senator himself to entertain these claims. In particular, the Power Line blog proposed a theory that Larry Reid may have been involved in a fight with his brother, pointing to a source who said Larry mentioned such a confrontation at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting on New Year's Eve.

Reid's office and the Reid family have refused to discuss the allegations, and no concrete proofs suggest it ever took place. The Capitol Police, who were responsible for Reid's security during the time of the injury, have also declined to disclose their reports on the incident.

Harry Reid revealed this week that he will not be seeking re-election next year, meaning he will end his 30-year run in Congress. In his tenure, he has held the positions of both Senate Majority and Minority Leader. Former chair of the Nevada Gaming Commission, Reid is known as one of the primary advocates for gambling issues in the Senate.

Over the last few years, Reid has played a pivotal role in the fight over online gambling at the federal level. By the end of 2014, Reid hinted he may be supportive of the Restoration of America's Wire Act (RAWA), the proposed online gambling prohibition supported by Harry Reid's friend but political adversary, Sheldon Adelson.

Reid's retirement and cheering for a poker exemption in RAWA have fueled suspicion about a potential arrangement with Adelson to keep the Las Vegas Sands CEO from supporting challengers in his 2016 Senate race; rumors he has denied.
