Harry Reid Airport in Las Vegas Increases Fees for Airlines
Travelers flying in and out of the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas are worried their ticket costs might rise. This is due to the airport raising the fees it charges airlines for landing or taking off.
These new rates will be implemented from July 1st, as announced by local television station KTNV. Passengers have been discussing the possibility that ticket prices might increase to cover the added expenses.
Airlines are charged for use of gates, renting terminals, landing, and turning planes. The proposed fee hikes were approved by the Clark County Commissioners.
CPE Hike
In the updated fee structure, the cost per enplaned passenger (CPE) charged to airlines will jump from $6.49 to $7.27.
Joe Rajchel, spokesperson for Harry Reid Airport, told KTNV: "We try to keep those prices, the fees and the operations low for the airlines to hopefully carry that over to the customers as well." He added that "all of the operating costs are covered by the users who use this airport and the revenue that comes from that."
Most of the revenue earned from these fees covers the expenses such as debt repayment, salaries, benefits, operations, and maintenance.
Passenger Anxiety
Reaction from travelers included concerns about potential price hikes. Kristi Grasser questioned KTNV, "If we're going to increase it for the airlines themselves, is that going to come back on the people who are buying the flights, buying the tickets?" Las Vegas resident Marlon Medina, "I like how rates are right now, I don't think I want them to change."
In the coming year, the airport predicts a record of 58.8 million passengers. This is up from 2023's previous record of 57.6 million. The highest number of passengers in the airport's history was 52.6 million in 2022.
Rosemary Vassiliadis, Clark County's director of aviation, expressed enthusiasm about the new passenger record: "Setting a new annual passenger record emphasizes the strength of air travel in Las Vegas and the faith in Harry Reid International Airport to deliver a world-class customer experience." She also mentioned that efforts are underway to meet the rising demand and expectations for 2024.
Clark County is currently considering the development of a second commercial airport in the Ivanpah Valley, southwest of Las Vegas.
