Harry and Meghan Accused of Hypocrisy for Flying on Oil Heir's Private Jet to Las Vegas
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are facing backlash for allegedly taking a private jet owned by an oil heir to attend a Katy Perry concert in Las Vegas.
As reported by the UK's The Sun, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who are known advocates for climate change action, attended the final performance of Perry's "Play" residency at Resorts World only after traveling from Santa Barbara in a plane co-owned by Michael Herd.
Herd is the president and owner of Herd Producing Company, an oil and natural gas supplier in Texas.
This 40-minute flight on a jet that supposedly emits 2 tons of carbon dioxide per hour has sparked anger from conservative British commentators and social media users.
The Eco-Friendly Flyaway!
Under the terms of the Paris Agreement, an international treaty aimed at keeping global warming below 2°C, one's annual carbon budget should not exceed 2.1 tons for the entire year. Both the US and UK have ratified this agreement.
"Saving the planet one Katy Perry concert at a time!" tweeted Kevin O'Sullivan. On his British TV show TVTalk, the conservative commentator added, "What's the deal with these people? They're always telling us to try to save the planet, but it seems like they don't follow their own advice, doesn't it?"
In their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey for CBS News, Harry spoke about climate change as one of the most critical issues facing humanity.
"We need to do better about stopping or allowing things that are causing so much harm to so many of us at the source, rather than just focusing on the symptoms," he said. "These seemingly historic weather events are becoming increasingly common, and this crisis will only exacerbate."
The Brother Who Sets the Example
Just hours after the expelled royals flew to Vegas, Prince William, Harry's brother and heir to the throne, took a commercial British Airways flight to Singapore to receive an environmental award.
While commercial airplanes can produce up to 8.4 metric tons of carbon dioxide per hour, this emission is shared among 350 or more passengers.
A Gulfstream jet can only hold a maximum of 19 passengers. According to The Sun, the Vegas trip included Harry, Meghan, Gwyneth Paltrow, Zoe Saldana, Cameron Diaz, Diaz's husband, Benji Madden, Hollywood producer David Katzenberg, and Herd and his wife, Bumble dating app billionaire Whitney Wolfe Herd.
Royal biographer Angela Levin told The Sun that Harry should be removed from his own charity, Travalyst, which promotes sustainable tourism.
"This sort of behavior is the very reason we call them eco-hypocrites," Levin said.
