Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Increases Gambling Space, Unveils World Series of Poker Area

Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel in Murphy, North Carolina, is in the middle of a $275 million refurbishment and extension project. Patrons have begun to check out the improvements, which include a bigger betting area and the launch of the property's World Series of Poker (WSOP) Room.

Last Wednesday, the Native American-owned casino managed by Caesars Entertainment showcased 25,000 square feet of newly added betting space. The casino floor extension now spans a total of 75,000 square feet.

The extra room enabled the casino to install 300 more slot machines and eight real-life table game stations. Within a few hours of opening the new casino area, a lucky player scooped up a $1,605 jackpot on a Double Double Bonus Poker machine.

A central bar featuring 22 seats and nine bartop video gaming machines was also introduced.

"We are overjoyed to reach this milestone in our expansion process and unveil the larger gaming floor, which is the result of months of hard work and dedication by both our in-house staff and our general contractor," said Lumpy Lambert, general manager of Harrah's Cherokee Valley River. "Every detail of the casino floor expansion was chosen to ensure unforgettable experiences, and we are sure that our new features and services will not only live up to our guests' expectations but surpass them."

Recently, a long-craved poker room has also kicked off operations. The WSOP Room is available from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., and 4 a.m. on weekends.

The poker room will only offer cash games until July, when they will begin weekly $80 No-Limit Hold'em tournaments on Mondays and Thursdays.

Resort Transformation

Harrah's Cherokee Valley River is the sister resort to the tribe's bigger casino, Harrah's Cherokee, found about an hour's drive north in Cherokee. Debuted in 2015, Harrah's Cherokee Valley River attracts gamblers from nearby Georgia and Tennessee, where casino gambling is prohibited.

The $275 million resort makeover is the property's first major revamp. Apart from the more extensive gaming space and WSOP poker room, the funding covers a fresh hotel tower with close to 300 rooms.

In addition, a full-service spa and salon and a 1,700-spot parking garage are underway. The hotel tower is slated to double the destination's overall accommodations. The upcoming amenities are scheduled to be accomplished and open before the end of the year.

Sovereign Authorities

The Native American rulers can probably rest easier this week, given rumors from North Carolina's capital that Republicans in the General Assembly are not as keen to promote legislation that would authorize commercial casinos.

An attempt spearheaded by Phil Berger (R-Rockingham), the Senate’s presiding officer, faceplanted last year as a result of party deadlock, with the opposition accusing the powerful legislator of concocting a backroom deal to bring Vegas mega-resorts to the Old North State.

House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) recently noted that "hard feelings" should keep casino debates on hold for the foreseeable future.

Berger has committed not to renew his casino crusade.
