Free time for recreation - Hamburg's all-day pools: Experience the outdoors indoors

Residents of Hamburg seeking to cool off outdoors and soak up the sun during the recent hot weather can already do so at the city's six year-round pools. According to Bäderland spokesperson Michael Dietel, four additional summer outdoor pools connected to indoor pools will also be opened soon, enabling swimmers to move indoors during cooler weather. However, the four pools operated by Bäderland that are outdoor-only will not open until temperatures stay warm year-round. The German Weather Service predicts temperatures of up to 27 degrees Celsius in Hamburg this week, with especially summer-like conditions on May Day and Thursday. After that, the temperatures will start to drop.

"We appreciate the nice weather this week, but we can see that it will be cooler again next week," Dietel explained, adding that they don't want to keep opening and closing the pools. "It's a waste of resources and doesn't make sense." He also pointed out the difficulty of managing staff during skills shortages and a challenging hiring situation, as many people do not show up when called. Despite this, the outdoor pools are already prepared.

Ongoing hiring and weekly pre-swim tests

With the current lack of required staff, Bäderland continues to recruit for suitable candidates. Prospective workers can be tested at a pre-swim analysis to ensure they are physically fit for the job. In addition to German language skills and a criminal record clearance, applicants must be at least 18 years old. "As soon as someone turns 18, they can work for us, even if they don't yet have a silver lifeguard certificate," Dietel explained, adding that the certificate can be earned later.
