Rhythms substitute for spheres - Hamburg won't feature women's tennis.
Initially, the "Hamburg European Open" (WTA 250) was planned to occur from July 20th to 26th at the THC Horn-Hamm in the Stadtpark using mobile constructions. Due to an earlier transfer of the men's competition (ATP 500) to the "Tennium" organization, some prominent players like Angelique Kerber (36) had already committed to participate.
Nevertheless, the final decision was made.
No Women's Tournament in Hamburg!
"It's an extraordinary year, and we sadly had to make the challenging decision to cancel the competition - also to avoid risking our license," says Reichel.
The root cause is a miscalculation in the event schedule. Due to a weekend clash with performances by popular German rapper Finch ("Rummelbums") at the adjacent open-air stage, there's a potential issue with the noise pollution and excessive crowd density.
Despite Reichel's efforts to find an alternative venue at the last minute, it proved fruitless. The event is now being shifted to the Romanian city of Iasi, home to approximately 300,000 people, located close to Moldova. Purchased tickets can be returned.
In 2025, the women's event is set to return to Hamburg. "We're already engaged in meaningful discussions to find a permanent solution in Hamburg," Reichel says. "Hamburg deserves a high-ranking women's tennis tournament."
Sports Senator Christoph Holstein expressed his dissatisfaction with the cancellation. He also emphasized, "We'll continue to support the organizer's aim to secure a 500 series tournament and reaffirm our commitment to the Rothenbaum location. We'll establish long-term stability through fixed, non-conflicting dates for the women's and men's tournament in Hamburg, starting in the coming year."
Remarkably, the men's tournament is scheduled to return to its original monthly slot prior to the French Open in 2025.
