The Ascent series escalates. - Hall prohibitions! Notifications! Penalties!
The Römerstrom Gladiators from Trier and the Fraport Skyliners of Frankfurt will clash in their third match of the ProA play-offs on Wednesday night (7:30 pm). This best-of-five series is currently tied 1:1, meaning the winner will progress to the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga. However, the focus of the game has shifted towards off-court issues.
There was turmoil following the first game of the series, won by Frankfurt with a score of 72:70 in Trier. This resulted in some altercations, verbal abuse, and offensive gestures from both players and spectators. The league authorities responded by imposing penalties and fines.
Shortly after, Frankfurt alleged that they had heard racist dog whistles from the Trier block during the game.
Intense ProA Promotion Matches: Hall Ban! Reports! Fines!
The Trier club released a statement on Wednesday morning stating that they had not found any evidence of racism directed towards the Frankfurt or Trier players. They assured that they would continue their investigation into the claim and take action if necessary. They had previously engaged in talks with fans who had misbehaved during other games, and these supporters have been banned from attending match 3.
Just as the Trier club released their statement, the Skyliners released their own. In it, Managing Director Yannick Binas declared that the team had reported the incidents to the authorities. "We have filed charges against unidentified individuals for the offensive chants in a bid to set an example and also support our player Ife Ajayi against these hurtful insults. Unfortunately, identifying the culprits in a densely populated crowd is a challenging task."
Let's hope that the sport takes center stage again in match 3.
