Hackers target Twitch, disrupting earnings of top 100 streamers.
The live streaming platform Twitch has been drawing attention recently. A group of unidentified hackers recently infiltrated the service. They managed to snatch 135GB of data, including incomes for the top 100 streamers. This whole package of stolen source code was eventually made available for download on 4Chan through a torrent link. Along with the download link, the hackers wanted to encourage competition in the online video streaming industry, describing the Twitch community as "disgusting."
Twitch Confirms Breach
The verification of the event didn't take too long because the source codes and earnings started appearing on Twitter. Twitch confirmed the hacking promptly, though they couldn't provide much detail about the extent of the hack. They're now working diligently to clarify the situation and will update the community with new information as soon as possible.
At first, it seemed like the list was fake, but reactions from some streamers soon put that idea to rest. This data dump included the earnings of several streamers, including MontanaBlack88, Knossi, and Gronkh from Germany.
Earnings of the German Top Streamers
Twitch's payouts to these streamers from August 2019 to October 2021 were eventually exposed. The top 100 streamers made millions in profits during this period. The top earner is CriticalRole with a total of almost $10 million. Second place goes to xQxOW with $8.5 million, while 3rd to 5th places come in at over $5 million. Ludwig lands in 6th place with $3.3 million, after which there's a noticeable drop.
Despite this, German streamers are also thriving internationally. Germany's top streamer, MontanaBlack, occupies 17th place with $2.4 million. Knossi, who earned $2.15 million, is just behind in 21st place. GRONKH also shows up with $1.5 million on the 42nd spot. The affected streamers are obviously not happy with this, so some may consider moving to a different platform.
Criticism of Twitch - Shift of Streamers?
In the past, Twitch has faced criticism for various reasons. From copyright issues to racism, hate speech, and even swatting (where police are falsely dispatched to a streamer's home, resulting in invasive and potentially dangerous visits to streaming rooms).
In the first quarter of this year, Twitch lost 70% of its viewer hours, making it the most popular platform in Germany. However, the potential implications of this hacking incident might make some streamers consider switching platforms. In the past, major broadcasters have already abandoned Twitch and migrated to other platforms.
