Drugs or Medicines - Habeck cautions against transferring pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Economics Minister Robert Habeck from the Green party cautioned against the idea of moving the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals overseas. Habeck stated during a tour of pharmaceutical plants in Barleben, Saxony-Anhalt, that this could result in potential shortages. While replica medications may be produced in Southeast Asia, offering a sense of security in a volatile world market, Habeck acknowledged that the world is not currently like that.

During his visit, Habeck observed a plant owned by Salutas Pharma, a subsidiary of Sandoz. Sandoz's German head, Thomas Weigold, expressed support for a "basic care summit" and changes to the pricing system.

Habeck welcomed the suggestion to examine the supply situation for essential medications and perhaps even determine which product ranges should be at least partially manufactured in Europe or Germany to boost production in the event of an emergency. The COVID-19 pandemic made it apparent that we need to be more vigilant in this area. Thus, this might lead to a slight increase in the price of medicines. Habeck plans to discuss the proposal of such a summit within the German government.

In recent years, there have been recurrent supply issues and bottlenecks for certain medicines, including antibiotics. A significant portion of these products is manufactured in Asia.
