Characteristics of a cult - GZSZ legend recommends Bayern player for the European Championships.
On a Wednesday morning, actor Wolfgang Bahro (63) announced the next player representing Germany in the upcoming European Championship (June 14 to July 14). In a brief video, he stands in front of a house displaying the blue and purple "Gute Zeiten, Schlechte Zeiten" logo. Bahro, who's been portraying Jo Gerner on the soap opera GZSZ since 1993, shares: "Let's go for Germany with Jo."

The actor delivered the news: "Hey everyone, it's my pleasure to inform you about the next national player participating in the European Championship. It's Joshua Kimmich (29/FC Bayern, editor's note)." Initially wearing sunglasses, he removes them for the announcement. Kimmich has expressed his admiration for the series and the character Jo Gerner specifically, even visiting the studio with his wife.
Since 2016, Kimmich has donned the German national team jersey and has played in 84 international matches, including eight at the 2016 and 2021 European Championships. Earlier this year, he expressed his excitement for the upcomig tournament: "Something interesting and thrilling is about to happen. I believe the people are excited. However, as a team, we must take the first step and triumph, and then we can invite the crowd to join us in the emotional journey."
Julian Nagelsmann, Germany's coach, on Kimmich in March: "Josh is a critical player for us since he embodies many values that are missing among new, young professional players of this generation."
Computers in Berlin will unveil the final team, likely complete with 26 or 27 members, on Thursday (1pm).
