A promotional event intensifies. - Gunshots at a soccer celebration at Ballermann.
In a video that spread across the internet, law enforcement officers can be seen entering Schinkenstraße (really, Carrer del Pare Bartomeu Salvà), with the sounds of Malle's "Bamboleo" playing in the background. One officer is even seen pointing a gun upward and firing several times.
Breaking Down the Incident
Following a successful season, football club Alemannia Aachen moved up to the third league. This motivates their fans and ultras to travel to Mallorca to celebrate. On Monday night, they flock to Ballermann to toast the promotion. The "Mallorca Zeitung" reports that some Aachen players were present as well.
The initial joviality at this celebration fades, however, when some Aachen supporters were accused by police of creating a disturbance at the "Bamboleo" nearby. The bouncers at the bar had given orders for them to leave.
The National Police were then prompted to intervene at Ballermann. With their weapons at the ready, they chased away the Aachen crowd. During this, multiple shots were heard. A National Police spokesperson remarked that these were just blank cartridges.
A Mixed Account
According to the police, "standard procedures for public order violations were followed." But the story doesn't match witness accounts, which state that at least two Aachen fans had injuries from rubber bullets.
The police contest this information. The only thing fired were blank cartridges, they said.
Furthermore, a bouncer at the Bamboleo supposedly assaulted an Aachen supporter while the police watched.
It's undeniable that at least one "Bamboleo" employee was injured during the riots. No arrests were reported yet, and the investigation is still ongoing.
Alemannia Aachen had already earned promotion to the 3rd league after beating Bonner SC 4-2 during the previous weekend and claimed the Mittelrhein Cup, granting them entry into the DFB Cup.
