Guest Hurt after Window Crashes down at Las Vegas Resort Hotel

A pane of glass from a massive window separated from the Elara by Hilton Grand Vacations hotel on Tuesday, resulting in injuries to a visitor near the pool area. The property's representative verified the occurrence in a public address, maintaining that the guest's wounds were "slight."

A close-up inspection revealed numerous fractured windows on the side of the establishment overlooking Harmon Avenue; one of them was concealed beneath a white sheet.

An eyewitness (@ShawnaKhalafiTV) shared on Twitter, "We could tell the wind was getting increasingly intense as the windows were trembling." She went on to describe the moment of the fall: "The loud crash and sight of the glass shattering as it landed happened next."

In its official comment, the resort's spokesperson took note, "The well-being of our members, visitors, and staff is our paramount concern. We're currently examining the matter and performing the vital repairs. Our information indicates that one patron experienced minor injuries, and we're already making sure their stay is otherwise undisturbed by this mishap."

As it broke the news, the local Twitter handle Las Vegas Locally joked, "The resort fee for the affected guest was annulled as a goodwill gesture." Actually, the Elara is a timeshare building and not strictly a hotel.

Previous Cases

Last September, a window plunged from the 23rd level of the Waldorf Astoria, landing more than 200 feet away on the Strip without harming anyone.

One year ago, pieces of glass from Fontainebleau Las Vegas, then yet to open, fell onto the resort's pool deck. No injuries were recorded. A resort representative declared back then that "they had a scaffolding impact the building's curtainwall, not making the panels fall from their secure locations."

Elara Explanation

The Elara by Hilton Grand Vacations, a 50-story building that's not a casino hotel, is situated slightly east of Planet Hollywood. (At one point, it was known as PH Towers and opened in December 2009.)

This $660 million project comprises 1,201 rooms. While engaging in timeshare ownership, 200 of these premises were used as hotel rooms in Planet Hollywood's facilities.

The Great Recession led to Westgate Resorts having to offload the property to Hilton Grand Vacations Company, which renamed it Elara and adjusted all its units to timeshares in March 2012.

Several other windows on the Elara show that the problem was not an isolated one.
