Green Party MP assaulted in Göttingen; Minister President Weil expresses disapproval.
A relevant concern was raised by Weil. He stated, "In order for democracy to function effectively, individuals need to publicize their beliefs and convictions." He further urged people to "stay alert, confront unchecked aggressive behavior in political discussions, and put a stop to it if possible."
Vice President of the Bundestag, Katrin Göring-Eckardt (Greens), also addressed the significance of public engagement in safeguarding democracy. She believed that the attack on Kollenrott was a direct strike at this idea.
In an incident that transpired on Saturday in Göttingen city center, Kollenrott was slightly injured. A man, aged 66, physically assaulted her during a campaign event in the pedestrian zone near the Old Town Hall. The suspect was promptly apprehended by the police.
Prior to the altercation, the man had made disparaging remarks about her party, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen. This prompted a conversation with Kollenrott, which eventually led to him assaulting her with several punches in the upper body. The MP sustained minor injuries on her arms.
Recently, there have been numerous instances of politicians being targeted in attacks. In the first part of this month, Matthias Ecke, an SPD MEP based in Saxony, was severely beaten in Dresden. It's been reported that perpetrators had targeted a 28-year-old man putting up Green election posters as well.
In Berlin, SPD Senator for Economic Affairs, Franziska Giffey, was slightly injured in an attack using a bag. In Dresden, various local Green politicians and campaign workers faced aggressive confrontations. An AfD member of the state parliament in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was also attacked and left injured.
