Füllkrug responded calmly. - Graphic BVB gag surfaces during European Championship selections.
Tuesdays dawn saw Niclas Füllkrug (31), the BVB striker, added to the list of DFB athletes vying for the European Championship. On the airwaves of "1Live" station, he shared some personal anecdotes. Topping the list was talk about a special meal that Füllkrug cooks.
The athlete was queried on what he could brag about in the kitchen: "Probably my wife says it's either Geschnetzeltes or Bolognese." The discussion between the radio host, Briesch, and Füllkrug got intense regarding which recipe yielded a better sauce. Vegetables to the point of being indiscernible or just a few? What about the stock? And finally, a not-so-pleasant joke followed.
The host jibed, "Well, you always serve it on a plate, right? Since you're from Dortmund, bowls are harder to come by." Despite Füllkrug's 12 goals this season, Borussia are in fifth place, 27 points short of championship winners Leverkusen.
How did Füllkrug respond to this? With equanimity. "True. We eat from pots. Pots, not bowls!" A clear message.
What Füllkrug insinuates here is that rather than seizing the championship cup, Dortmund is still clashing for the handle pot. The club faces Real Madrid in the Champions League final on June 1 - will they manage to hoist the trophy again? The last time they flaunted it was in 1997.
Due to the final in London, Füllkrug won't be present for the initial stages of the DFB group's readiness for the European Championship (June 14-July 14). The training camp lasts from May 26 to 31 in Blankenhain - part of Weimar. Julian Nagelsmann, the coach, will have to manage without all the pros who are busy vying for the prestigious Champions League triumph.
Recently, Nagelsmann voiced, "Of course, it'd be nice if everyone were here," but added, "The thrill prevails when players reach the Champions League final." Then, perhaps, they'll celebrate with the pot instead of with the trophy...
