Coastline Defense - Government aids water and soil associations following October's flood damage
Tobias Goldschmidt, the Environment Minister, has indicated potential support for water and soil associations to safeguard the Baltic Sea coast and fix regional levees. He mentioned to the German Press Agency that certain water and soil associations might not have the necessary financial and organizational means to tackle the task of safeguarding coastal flood protection. Most of these groups wouldn't be able to afford the ten percent cost of mending their local levees on their own, he explained. The minister has been engaged in various discussions since last October's significant storm surge in the Baltic Sea and has observed this as a crucial observation. Considering the levees require immediate restoration for the coming storm surge season, prompt, practical action is paramount. "The inhabitants of Schleswig-Holstein's security is at risk," said Goldschmidt. "In this specific predicament, I deem it fitting for the government to cover the ten percent portion for water and soil organizations."
Nonetheless, the Minister emphasized that this could be a short-term solution. "Although local autonomy is a valuable trait, the water and soil associations along the Baltic Sea must reach self-sustainability as soon as possible." In the days ahead, he plans to discuss this issue with the parties involved.
The ministry conveys that it has received 47 applications for funding to reconstruct local levees thus far. It has already reviewed 18 applications, awaiting official endorsement. Approval for the first applications is anticipated in the next fortnight. The state is expediting the procedure for processing additional applications, according to the statement.
