Who's willing to make a purchase? - Göttingen town decides to transfer a prison.

A prison with thick concrete walls and barred windows in Göttingen, a city with 135,000 residents in Lower Saxony is up for sale. The old prison, located about 200 meters west of the central pedestrian zone, was rendered obsolete after the construction of a new one in nearby Rosdorf.

The city of Göttingen bought the building from Lower Saxony, and it has remained empty for 16 years. Now, the city is searching for a new owner. However, beware; the building has hooks!

Until Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, interested parties can submit their offers. The city refers to the building, built in 1836, as a "protected immovable property with charm and potential in an excellent city center location."

Sale Details and Building Condition

The property boasts 1,274 square meters of usable space on three floors and an unfinished attic. The lowest bid for this historical property is set at 140,000 euros. The City Council will make the final decision about the new owner.

But be cautioned - the building is said to be in poor condition according to experts. It lacks water, sewage, electricity, and it's heating system requires a complete overhaul. The windows are simple glass ones, and since the building is a monument, the window bars must remain in place.

In addition to these challenges, the city also requires that a usage concept and financing plan be submitted by potential buyers.

Despite these obstacles, several interested parties have already registered, including a Göttingen initiative association aiming to buy the former prison and create a "Social Center".

Plans for converting the building into a museum, hostel, or co-working spaces have, so far, failed to materialize.

The barred windows must be retained by the new owner
