Goodbye Margaritaville Casino in Biloxi - Transferred to a New Owner
The Margaritaville Casino and Restaurant in Biloxi, Mississippi, which has been sitting empty for nine years, changed hands on Thursday, but it wasn't the rock band KISS taking ownership. Instead, MIC, a company owned by Harry Mohney, the operator of Las Vegas strip clubs, purchased the site.
KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley had considered renovating and reopening the old Margaritaville as their second Rock & Brews Casino. Their first one opened in Braman, Oklahoma, in May 2022. Their plan involved a massive $200 million makeover of the 40,000-square-foot casino. It would have had over 1,000 slot machines, dozens of table games, and a sportsbook. Additionally, they intended to include a 3,000-seat concert venue and a new 300-room hotel.
Originally, KISS was set to break ground on the project on March 15, 2020, during a performance at the Coast Coliseum in Biloxi. However, both events were canceled due to the pandemic shutdown. It seems the duo's interest in acquiring the property has since diminished.
No New Casino Plans
Mohney does not have casino plans for the property, as reported by the Sun Herald. Instead, he envisions a multi-venue attraction with two restaurants, bars, and entertainment options such as karaoke and axe throwing.
The sale price was not disclosed, but the Margaritaville property was listed for $4.9 million.
Mohney plans on keeping one aspect from the casino's history. He intends to bring back boxing matches to the area with a boxing ring, as shared by his attorney.
Buffett's Next Exit
The 68,000-square-foot building, constructed for $48 million, was opened by musician Jimmy Buffett and Grand Casinos founder Tom Brosiq on May 22, 2012, under a license from Buffett's restaurant and bar brand. Margaritaville Biloxi boasted 820 slot machines, 18 table games, multiple dining decks, and a marina with waterside dining, drinks, and entertainment. Buffett, a native of nearby Pascagoula, performed at the grand opening.
Interestingly, in June 2013, the casino was the first in the state's history to offer outdoor gaming, featuring three blackjack tables. The venture closed just over two years after opening, on September 15, 2014. The property was listed for sale the following year at $18 million.
