Gilgo Beach Murder Suspect Linked to Las Vegas
Las Vegas police are examining unresolved murder cases in the city to determine if there's a connection to the Manhattan architect who stands accused of the Gilgo Beach serial killings. Rex Heuermann, 59 years old, was taken into custody and charged last week for the deaths of three of the 11 women whose bodies were uncovered on a secluded highway on New York's Long Island back in 2010 and 2011.
Despite living and allegedly committing murders in New York, Heuermann also owned two timeshares on the Las Vegas Strip.
"We are familiar with Rex Heuermann’s connection to Las Vegas," the Las Vegas Metro Police Department said in a statement. "We are presently reviewing our cold cases to establish if he had any part in them."
Records obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal showed that Heuermann purchased a two-bedroom timeshare in 2004 at 265 E. Harmon Avenue, currently known as Club Wyndham Grand Desert, for $51,298. He later sold it for the same amount in 2013.
Heuermann still owns another two-bedroom timeshare he bought in 2005 at Club De Soleil on 5499 W. Tropicana Avenue. According to the newspaper, he purchased it with his wife, Asa Ellerup, for approximately $17K.
Law enforcement haven't publicly stated if they have searched either property for potential evidence.
Victim Characteristics
The three young women who are believed to have been murdered by Heuermann are thought to have been sex workers who advertised their services online. These women were identified as 24-year-old Melissa Barthelemy, 22-year-old Megan Waterman, and 27-year-old Amber Costello.
Their bodies were found during the search for the missing 23-year-old Shannon Gilbert, whose remains weren't discovered until a year later.
Heuermann is a suspect in three of the cases, but not all 11, as he is linked to Barthelemy, Waterman, and Costello via cellphone data.
Investigators are also hoping to build a sufficient case to charge him with the murder of a fourth victim, Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to all charges and has maintained his innocence in the killings.
