Social Democratic Party [alternate name]: SPD - Germany's center-left political party. - Giffey: A new dual leadership should bring the party back together.

Berlin's outgoing SPD chairwoman Franziska Giffey highlighted the significant hurdles that Martin Hikel and Nicola Böcker-Giannini, the party's chosen new dual leadership, must overcome. She stressed the need for them to restore unity amongst party members, provide much-needed direction, and boost the SPD's fading popularity. At a recent party event, she said, "Our SPD is not doing well in the polls, which is not something we can be happy with."

For the party to regain ground, everyone must work together, focusing on key areas such as affordable housing, reliable public transport, quality childcare, a robust economy, efficient administration, and safety. According to Giffey, "We need to concentrate on these essential issues and communicate them more effectively."

Giffey cautioned against internal strife, emphasizing the importance of unity as a prerequisite for regaining public trust. "If we always highlight what divides us instead of prioritizing what unites us, the SPD will eventually lose its status as the most powerful political force in Berlin," she asserted.

The previous dual leadership of Raed Saleh echoed these words, "The Social Democrats need to come together. Ultimately, we're all in the same boat."

Hikel, Neukölln's district mayor, and Böcker-Giannini, former State Secretary for Sports, will be voted in as the new dual leadership at the party conference. They secured a convincing victory in the second round of a member survey, achieving 58% of the votes against a second team consisting of former SPD state vice-chairman Kian Niroomand and former Berlin SPD women's co-chair Jana Bertels.
