Before a major battle between heavyweight fighters - German trainer readies Usyk for Fury bout
Let's talk about the boxing event of the century!
The upcoming match involves all the heavyweight titles in the world (WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO). For the first time in over two decades, there will be an undisputed champion of the top division.
Fury is favored by most bookmakers. However, one person who would bet on Usyk is 24-year-old Viktor Jurk, a professional fighter from the Hamburg "P2M" stable. Jurk spent six weeks sparring with Usyk in Valencia, Spain.
Jurk Vouches for Usyk's Preparation
Jurk, from Flensburg, was amazed by Usyk's determination. "I watched him train with a laser focus," he recalls. "He had tunnel vision the entire time. I was most impressed by that. When he's in the gym, he's only training and working. I learned a lot from him. He's an extraordinary athlete with a one-of-a-kind style."
Usyk's team chose Jurk due to his height - he's nearly as tall as Fury (2.06 meters). And because Jurk boxes in the same stance as Fury, who often switches it up during fights.
Jurk's manager, Bernd Bönte (68), played a part in setting up the arrangement as well. "Any sparring session with someone at the top of their game can only help Viktor improve," says Bönte.
That's why the young talent has also been a training partner for former champ Anthony Joshua (34) in the past. "With AJ, you know he can pack a punch," says Jurk, remarking on the difference. "Usyk, though, is like a cowboy. He targets you and then all of a sudden fires. And out of the seven punches he lands, five are loose and two are really hard. Accurate!"
"Usyk Fights Like a Cowboy"
So, it's no surprise that Jurk is backing Usyk on Saturday. "The result depends on who has a good day," he says. "Both are extremely strong mentally. I think mental strength will be the key factor in the end. I would wager on a knockout win for Usyk or a draw."
However, Jurk won't be present at the massive arena. "I have my own duties," he explains. The undefeated behemoth (7 fights/6 knockouts) will have a warm-up bout against Mirko Tintor (37/Bosnia) at "Hamburg boxt!" in the Hotel Grand Elysée on Friday (8 pm, Sport.de) to kick off the BDB's 75th anniversary celebrations.
In the main event, P2M fighter Karen Chukhadzhian (28/Ukraine) and Britain's Harry Scarff (30) will fight for the right to challenge IBF welterweight world champion Jaron Ennis (26/USA).
