Comprehensive research study conducted on a vast scale. - German motorists' expletives revealed
People in Germany who love cars seem to also enjoy cursing while driving. A study by Nextbase, a company known for their dashcam technology, and YouGov found that German drivers have some favorite words to use when they're driving mad.
A total of 1059 people were questioned about the swear words they used the most while behind the wheel in 2023.
Top Swear Words Among German Drivers
The results show that "idiot" is by far the most commonly used word, with 15% of drivers picking it as their favorite word to use. Close behind are "asshole" with 11% and "bum" with 6%. In fourth and fifth place are "idiot" again, this time with 5%, and "moron" also earning 5%.
Men tend to be a little less civilized than women. 16% of male participants said they never use swear words while driving, while 14% of women made the same claim.
Swearing Trends Differ Between States
There's a notable difference in the way different parts of Germany approach swearing. Drivers in Saxony-Anhalt are the most well-behaved, with 39% of them claiming they never swear. In comparison, just 9% of drivers in Baden-Württemberg and Hamburg claim the same thing.
Calmness also increases with age. Only 5% of drivers aged 18-24 say they never swear, while 17% of drivers 55 and older do so.
German Drivers Show Creativity in Cursing
While "idiot" and "asshole" are popular choices, drivers in Germany also show their creativity when it comes to verbal abuse. Here are the ten most unusual swear words used by German drivers:
- blindflange - 2. banana brain - 3. side dish eater - 4. pinstripe hooligan - 5. egg whistle - 6. miserable - 7. frog's ass - 8. snorer - 9. toilet cleaner prick - 10. driver's license lottery winner.

Interestingly, it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine the person who came up with "driver's license lottery winner" actually won the lottery and has a terrible sense of humor.
