Initially, Joanne K. Rowling opposed the idea. - German enthusiast creates gigantic Harry Potter figure
Matthias Muckle, the talented creator behind Muckle Mannequins, has always had a knack for bringing characters to life through his figures. Starting as a child with pewter creations, he moved on to become a merchant before joining his parents' stonemasonry business. His interest in mannequins eventually led him to create impressive replicas of big-name characters like Lara Croft from "Tomb Raider." Over the past two decades, he's created iconic figures such as Superman and Batman.
Now, he's bringing another beloved character to life – Hagrid from "Harry Potter"! Based in Waghäusel, Baden-Württemberg, Muckle's company has produced lifelike figures ranging from 1:1 scale Hermione, Ron, Snape, and Voldemort. And what would a Harry Potter cast be without Hagrid?
Getting approval from J.K. Rowling
Muckle faced a unique challenge with Hagrid – the half-giant required detailed attention. "We had to work with images from the films to create a 3D model of Hagrid on the computer," he shares. In the past, they used to make everything from clay and polystyrene. However, their collaboration with Hagrid's creator, J.K. Rowling, presented some hurdles. "The author didn't want her characters to be recreated life-size," Muckle reveals.
"When we tried to produce Newt Scamander from 'Fantastic Beasts' five years ago, we sent the first figure to England," he says. Fortunately, Rowling fell in love with it. "We got the approval right away."
Global demand for Hagrid
The Hagrid figure is made of fiberglass and weighs around 298 kilos. It comes at a hefty price tag of around €6,000. With an order of 111 figures already placed, these monstrously-sized characters will be shipped worldwide. In addition to prominent cities like New York and London, one figure will also be taken to Israel. There, they'll be on display at exhibitions. In Germany, a large bookshop has shown interest in acquiring one of these colossal figures.
As for Muckle, he wouldn't consider displaying these enormous pieces in his home. "With Hagrid's size, there would probably be issues with the ceiling height, even in my house," he says.
