Is Drexler stepping down? Could there be a new assistant coach? - Geraerts' plans for Schalke's second season

Following the 2-0 loss in Fürth toward the end of the season, coach Karel Geraerts (42) finally expressed his commitment to the Royal Blues. Geraerts commented, "I have a contract until 2025. I'm quite content here - we'll meet again on June 24!" He will start preparing for the upcoming second division campaign with Schalke at that time.

He had desired to have a conversation with his wife Julie Vanlerberghe prior to making this announcement, but this has since turned into a mere formality.

Geraerts sticks around and reveals his plans for his next season with Schalke!

Reinforcements for the team:

"I have proposed some positions that we might strengthen with particular players," explains the coach. Sporting director Marc Wilmots (55) and squad planner Ben Manga (50) have also compiled lists.

With seven players already leaving the team (Terodde, Latza, Ouwejan, Brunner, Idrizi, van der Sloot, and Langer), the professional performance center is expected to undergo significant modifications.

Drexler or Baumgartl, is one leaving?

Geraerts confirms that suspended players Dominick Drexler (33) and Timo Baumgartl (28) won't return to the squad: "There is a clear decision on the matter."

The complication is that Drexler and Baumgartl have contracts until 2025, which may lead to protracted severance negotiations.

A potential new helper:

As Geraerts was initially permitted to bring only one assistant instead of two when he took over in October alongside Tim Smolders (43), he is now contemplating adjustments to his coaching staff: "We're reviewing this situation. I desire a team with high-caliber members."

The contracts of assistant coaches Mike Büskens (56) and Matthias Kreutzer (41) and goalkeeping coach Simon Henzler (47) are coming to an end. While Geraerts is content with Henzler, it appears that Büskens and Kreutzer may be on edge.
