Gauselmann kicks off a tree initiative.

During the worldwide health crisis, business owner Paul Gauselmann is initiating an environmental campaign titled “Trees for Life.” To mark Gauselmann’s 85th birthday, this campaign aims to plant 85,000 trees throughout Germany. The initial locations for this climate protection project have been determined. What motivates this gambling billionaire?

Fighting Climate Change

The coronavirus demonstrates that all things start small, even the good. This notion is being shown by a vast climate protection campaign by Merkur boss Paul Gauselmann (85). Labeled "Trees for Life," the entrepreneur plans to plant 1,000 trees for each year of his life - totaling 85,000 trees across Germany. The goal is to create an "environment worth living in" for future generations.

Nettelbeck, in the Minden-Lübbecke district - the Gauselmann Group's home region - was selected as the initiation point for the reforestation project. The region's forests have been severely damaged due to climate change. A 3.6-hectare area on the north side of the Wiehengebirge is now being planted in partnership with the non-profit organization Trinkwasserwald e. V. (Drinking Water Forest).

Aiming for 10,000 Trees by April

Gauselmann highlighted that the organization has already transformed over 2,600 hectares of coniferous forest monocultures into ecologically sustainable mixed forests with the help of top-ups. Volunteers from the association started planting trees at the end of March. However, due to the Coronavirus Protection Ordinance, only two people are allowed to work at a time.

Despite the limited resources, it is expected that the planned number of 10,000 trees will be planted on the site by the end of April. These plants will be carefully chosen in consultation with the local forester Peter Heidmeier. He shared information on the current planting progress:

"This week, a total of 2,000 copper beeches were planted. Depending on the weather, we will continue planting other tree species after Easter. The 3.6-hectare area in Nettelstedt has been severely affected by various storms and the bark beetle, so we're extremely grateful for Paul Gauselmann's reforestation campaign."

Trinkwasserwald association chair Heiner Rupsch also commented, emphasizing the significance of the initiative. "Our environment and global climate have been out of balance." Extreme weather conditions and a lack of rainfall have reached significant proportions in the past two years. Paul Gauselmann is "bringing a strong impulse" by starting this tree planting project.

After Corona

Gauselmann declared his intent to combat climate change in August 2019. The "king of slot machines" viewed this tree campaign as something close to his heart. With four sons, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, his dedication is understandable. He shared:

"Nature has given me much in my long life."

Gauselmann is not letting the global health crisis surrounding Covid-19 hinder his environmental goals. All German gaming arcades have had to close, with Gauselmann affected as well. More than 700 branches in Germany and throughout Europe are closed and employees are on short-time working. However, the company is relying on financial reserves, but this does not hinder the entrepreneur's aspirations:

"Even in times of crisis, such as the present with the global corona pandemic, it is essential to defend an intact environment and safeguard our habitat - nature. The 85,000 trees will ensure that 16,800 people have access to clean drinking water for life."

Gauselmann’s tree campaign is advertised with the slogan "Wald: W (Wir) A (alle) L (leben) D (davon)". The company intends to support the government's efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic "wherever we are active". After the crisis, "there will be an even better future" for everyone, and the 85,000 trees will contribute to creating this better future.

During this time, the Merkur logo, representing the sun, gained worldwide popularity. Gauselmann's sales reach approximately 3 billion euros annually, and they employ more than 13,300 individuals. Since March 2018, you can find Merkur gaming centers on TUI cruise ships. Additionally, Gauselmann has served as the main sponsor for Düsseldorf's sports city since 2019. Merkur's online casino has existed for a while now.

Despite stepping down as VDAI CEO in June 2019, Gauselmann remains an action-oriented entrepreneur who is fully committed to his business. At the age of 85, he is recognized as one of the last German corporate patriarchs. He is also likely to bring about numerous movements and innovations in the gaming industry. Similarly, he is devoted to planting more trees.
