Gaming Giant Wishes to Foster Closer Collaborations with Gambling Dependence Institutions
The Joint Gaming Authority of the States (GGL) is pushing for closer collaboration with the gambling addiction coordination centers in each federal state. There's been an initial sit-down between GGL board member Ronald Benter and Konrad Landgraf, head honcho at the Bavarian State Gambling Addiction Center (LSG).
Benter's First Impressions
As reported by the official statement released by the GGL, Benter gleaned insights into the LSG's operations during their session. Landgraf outlined how the LSG fits into the larger Netzwerk Sucht Bayern network and shared the assortment of counseling and therapeutic services on offer.
Benter also underscored the importance of acquiring a well-rounded understanding of various state agencies' operations:
It's imperative for us to hear from all pertinent stakeholders and to develop a holistic perspective. Player protection and boosting public awareness are our top priorities. Regular dialogues with the state coordination centers help bolster our expertise. – Ronald Benter, GGL board member, quoting: GGL
The GGL is also striving to enhance the utility of buwei.de, an online platform providing a rundown of all state coordination centers. The platform is run by the Bavarian LSG.
GGL Tackles Gambling Addiction
The GGL has a dual mandate: direct the existing demand for gambling towards legitimate market channels, while simultaneously safeguarding those who might be struggling with addiction as best as possible.
Though some current German studies on gambling addiction have faced scrutiny from researchers and experts, the issue remains a serious concern that the GGL cannot afford to ignore, especially given the proliferation of the shadow market, where regulations meant to enhance player protection are ineffective.
In England, approximately 1.65 million children are exposed to gambling addiction within their households. Efforts are underway to combat this trend via the National Gambling Support Network (NGSN). Organizations like GambleAware's endeavors could serve as examples for Germany.
Future Engagements Planned
Benter has a rendezvous with the director of the Landesfachstelle Glücksspielsucht der Suchtkooperation Nordrhein-Westfalen, Verena Küpperbusch, marked on his calendar. A get-together with representatives from all state offices is also in the works for later this fall at the GGL's headquarters.
Furthermore, the Annual Action Day against Gambling Addiction falls on September 25, 2024. This event could pave the way for a meeting between GGL reps and the contact persons from the state offices.
In light of the GGL's efforts to improve its online resources, it might be beneficial to explore potential collaborations with online casinos in Germany to ensure responsible gaming practices. This could help in promoting awareness and prevention measures towards gambling addiction within the online gambling community.
The German discussion on gambling addiction is not isolated, as approximately 1.65 million children in England are affected by gambling addiction within their households. Efforts to combat this issue, such as those undertaken by the National Gambling Support Network (NGSN) and GambleAware, could provide valuable insights for Germany.
