GambleAware reveals partnership with football team
The British football team, Crystal Palace, has partnered up with the charity GambleAware to raise awareness about the potential risks associated with gambling in sports. This is the first collaboration of its kind in professional football.
Both football and gambling tend to feed off each other, with bets driving up interest in the sport, and vice versa. This is evident in the various sponsorship deals between clubs and betting companies. However, this symbiotic relationship is being interrupted to some extent by Crystal Palace's partnership with GambleAware. Previously, football clubs have served as advertising platforms for bookmakers.
Most fans understand that sports betting is a game of chance and that expertise alone doesn't guarantee a profit. However, the potential dangers of sports betting are rarely discussed in football. Advertisements, jerseys, and stadium boards primarily focus on emphasizing the fun of betting. This extensive gambling advertising in the UK is countered by GambleAware, a charitable body that provides information about gambling risks and offers counseling for addicts.
GambleAware's partnership with Crystal Palace will enhance its visibility. The organization's message, "Be GambleAware!", will be displayed on the stadium's perimeter boards and monitors at Selhurst Park. GambleAware Managing Director Marc Etched sees this as an "important first step towards a deeper response to the ever-increasing relationship between gambling and football".
Gambling and football: A close relationship
Gambling providers are visible in European leagues, with approximately half of the Premier League teams sponsored by the industry. Many former players, like Germany's Oliver Kahn who advertises for Tipico, endorse betting companies. Crystal Palace players also wear ManBetX, a betting firm's logo, on their uniforms. Bookmakers welcome this partnership with GambleAware, as they are not against gambling itself but "for responsible betting". ManBetX's managing director, Jon Collins, describes their role as "to support those who offer help and advice to gambling addicts."
As a Premier League team, Crystal Palace acknowledges its responsibility "to promote safe and responsible gambling." Chairman Steve Parish is pleased with the collaboration, stating, "I am delighted that Crystal Palace is the first club to partner with GambleAware and hope we can help raise awareness of their support for those in need."
Sports betting is considered one of the more complex games of chance due to its mix of luck and skill. Professional gamblers can sometimes make money from bets, either through their mathematical expertise or information advantage over the bookmaker. This ambiguity between gambling and skill leads some bettors to overestimate their abilities. They often place risky bets, believing they can win based on their own knowledge. To tackle these issues, GambleAware is not just relying on its agreement with Crystal Palace; the organization is also planning a massive awareness campaign with millions in funding.
