He previously accomplished the task. - Funkel assures thrilling events in cup victory.
The undefeated champions Leverkusen are pitted against nearly relegated 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the cup final, making it seem like a one-sided match on paper. And Lautern's coach, Friedhelm Funkel (70), agrees.
But he also mentioned Otto Rehhagel, who once said, "You always have a chance in a single game. If a team like Bayer doesn't lose more than 50 times in a row, it'd be time for the 53rd game."
If it ever comes down to that for Lautern, Funkel has a plan. Much like his only cup win as a player, in 1985 with Uerdingen, he has big plans for this cup.
"I'd put my head upside down again, just like in a famous picture from back then," says Funkel, who won the final 2:1 against Bayern with Bayer Uerdingen.
Funkel has experienced a cup win before.
"We hopped on a double-decker bus from the Olympic Stadium to the city afterwards and hit the discos until the morning," says Funkel.
The club has already booked a location for the celebration this year as well, and Funkel intends to party even if they lose. "The fact that we're playing in the final at all is reason enough. We can't expect to win," he added.
However, Funkel already has a trick for video analysis - in the scenes they pick, the outcome is not displayed. "The focus should be on the action itself and not one of Bayer's numerous victories this season," he said.
Funkel is already excited about the final taking place at Berlin's Olympic Stadium since his win in 1985. "The move to Berlin is the best thing that could have happened to the competition. From the first round of the cup, everyone's talking about Berlin, it's now just as significant as the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium."
