Rivalry Heats Up - Fritzi Häcker and Nele Olk emerge victorious in "Youth Debates" competition.

Fritzi Häcker from Richard-Wossidlo-Gymnasium in Waren and Nele Olk from the Gymnasium in Gadebusch emerged as the winners of the "Jugend debattiert" 2024 competition in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This was revealed by the state parliament on Tuesday night. The top two contestants in each age bracket typically go on to represent Mecklenburg-Vorpommern at the national finals in Berlin.

For secondary level I, the debate topic was "Should the police in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern be armed with tasers?" Occupying the second spot in this category was Mathilda Kirschnick from Albert Einstein Gymnasium in Neubrandenburg, while Juno Holbe from Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium in Wismar secured the third position.

Moving on to secondary level II, the question asked was "Should harsher punishments be meted out for threats against public officials and elected representatives?" Lotta Knüppel, a student from Richard-Wossidlo-Gymnasium in Waren, finished second, followed by Pia Marlene Flemming from Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium in Wismar.

"Jugend debattiert" is an initiative launched by the Federal President, and sits under his auspices. Its primary aim is to inspire pupils from all types of schools, starting from Year 5, to enhance their linguistic, political, and personal education. The state final is ordinarily held in the plenary hall of the state parliament. To determine the winner, the jury evaluates contestants on the basis of knowledge, expressiveness, verbal skills, and persuasiveness.
