French betting platform Winamax becomes the first French participant to join the German Sportsbook Association (DSWV).

French gambling operator Winamax joins German Sports Betting Association (DSWV) on January 1, 2024. The top player in France's gaming market has been active in Germany since 2021, sponsoring VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, and is determined to take a firmer stance against the underground betting market.

DSWV now has 17 members

Following Winamax's entrance, the DSWV now boasts 17 members. Previously, government-run ODDSET and Malta-based Tiptorro had also joined the association, as announced on the DSWV website.

In the official statement, DSWV President Mathias Dahms welcomes Winamax with enthusiasm as a new member:

Winamax brings not only extensive experience but also a refreshing breeze from the French market. Working together, we aim to promote responsible gaming and elevate the sports betting industry's standards. Mathias Dahms, President of DSWV, Source: DSWV**

The DSWV's main mission is to combat illicit betting offers and bolster the legal market. Winamax has previously urged politics to take stronger action against the gray and black markets, making it an ideal candidate for DSWV's "unyielding alliance" of members.

About Winamax

Initially a fantasy football provider based in London, Winamax now has its headquarters in Paris and employs 300 people.

After the French market's legalization, Winamax became the leading online poker provider in France, holding a market share of 60% and maintaining its lead.

Winamax introduced its sports betting offer in 2014 for the World Cup in Brazil. Today, it commands a 35% market share in this category, making it the market leader in France.

Winamax received permission to offer sports betting in Germany as of 2021, securing a provisional license in Darmstadt before switching to GGL's operation and licensing. Fans have seen the Winamax logo on VfB Stuttgart's Bundesliga jersey since the 2023/24 season.

Winamax strengthens its German presence

By joining the DSWV, Winamax further bolsters its presence in the German market and appears to be intensifying its efforts to curb illegal gambling, as Winamax CEO Alexandre Roos has also stated:

The sports betting industry remains a contentious topic in Germany. In an open letter to the ministers, activists have advocated for a complete ban on sports betting advertising. The DSWV, however, believes that the main risks stem from the black market indirectly fostered by the restrictive rules.

After securing a license to operate in Germany in 2021, Winamax further strengthens its presence in the German market by joining the DSWV. With their entrance, Winamax online casinos also become part of the German Sports Betting Association, expanding their efforts to combat illegal gambling.
