European elections get a beer-based boost - Free beer for voters in the first city.

Duisburg, a major city in North Rhine-Westphalia, innovatively seeks to boost citizens' voting participation in the upcoming European elections.

Historically, Duisburg's turnout in the 2019 European elections was low, with just 50.1% of eligible voters casting their ballot - the worst result among cities in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Sustainable change is unlikely, thus City Director Martin Murrack devised a novel campaign, offering a complimentary beer to those who:

  • Apply for
  • Submit their postal voting documents for the upcoming European elections on 9th June

Murrack's objective is two-fold:

  1. To raise awareness of the European elections
  2. To inform citizens - especially 16 and 17-year-olds, newly enfranchised voters - about their voting right.

Cheers will be popping corks and tapping casks at the König Pilsener brewery, established in 1858, from 17th May onwards. With your completed voting forms or by submitting an application at their information stand you'll receive a complimentary drink. Attracting as many potential voters as possible will also be a priority. Murrack's invitation, "Cheers to democracy!", is inclusive and welcoming.

There is plenty of beer at the König Pilsener brewery in Duisburg

The venue is Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 308 in Duisburg-Beeck.

Cutting costs is a win-win, assured Murrack, as the brewery is donating the beer free-of-charge. To observe due propriety, only non-alcoholic beer will be offered, so revelers can't vote while intoxicated, and the state electoral officer has not raised any concerns.

In the future, additional election drives might prove worthy of free beer offers, as per the city's ambitious interventions.
