Clashes in various places. - France evacuates vacationers from New Caledonia.
France is taking action to evacuate French tourists from the troubled South Pacific territory of New Caledonia. According to French television station BFMTV, the first airplanes carrying tourists to Australia and New Zealand took off on military aircraft. After arriving in these countries, tourists will complete their journey to France by boarding regular flights.
The tension in New Caledonia has been escalating for more than a week, resulting in the loss of seven lives. In response, France declared a state of emergency and sent additional security forces to the archipelago. The turmoil began after Paris announced plans to grant citizens of French heritage the right to vote, a move that worries independence activists in New Caledonia. This island nation is home to approximately 270,000 people, with a majority of them hoping for their own independent state.
During a visit to New Caledonia on Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron stated his plan to put the reform on hold until the situation stabilizes and political discussions can resume. Nouméa-La Tontouta International Airport has remained closed since May 14, canceling all commercial flights. Australia and New Zealand took similar steps by using military aircraft to airlift their citizens out earlier in the week.
