Düsseldorf - UPDATES: Current news stories from the city of Düsseldorf. - Fourteen bold individuals awarded a rescue medal, one sacrificing his life in the process.

Fourteen brave individuals who have selflessly saved their fellow citizens' lives at the risk of their own will be presented with the North Rhine-Westphalia Rescue Medal this Friday. The ceremony will take place at the Ständehaus in Düsseldorf at 6 p.m., officiated by Minister President Hendrik Wüst (CDU).

One of this year's honorees will be remembered for a particularly heart-wrenching incident: Jochen Naßmacher of Lengerich, who passed away in December 2022 after trying to help a co-worker being harassed by a man. His son and brother will accept the posthumous award in his honor.

The following are examples of other courageous acts worthy of recognition:

  • A heroic individual from Würselen saved a woman from plummeting to her death off a highway bridge in July 2021.
  • In December 2021, a courageous man from Blankenheim intervened when a woman was viciously attacked by her dog, saving her from further harm.
  • In April 2022, two inspectors from Osnabrück and Nottuln, respectively, successfully saved a man from drowning in the Dortmund-Ems Canal. The former will receive the Rescue Medal, while the latter will receive a public commendation for their efforts.
  • A handful of selfless rescuers will be recognized for repeatedly entering burning houses to save others.

The Rescue Medal has been presented since 1951, with 1391 recipients honored by the State Chancellery to date.
