Former LSU football player charged with nearly 9,000 illegal sports bets

A former LSU football player who was drafted by the New England Patriots last year is facing numerous problems after he allegedly made more than 8,900 illegal sports bets while in school.

Kayshon Boutte, 21, turned himself in to Louisiana State Police this morning after a warrant was issued for his arrest in the 19th District Court in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Prosecutors allege Bout illegally opened and managed a FanDuel sports betting account while he was a student-athlete at Louisiana State University and played football for the Tigers.

Bout was charged with misdemeanor computer fraud and underage gambling. He was released on $6,000 bail. The computer fraud charge carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Affidavit Details

FanDuel's internal investigation revealed that on April 5, 2002, Boutte set up an online sports betting account using the personal information of his girlfriend, Kayla Fortenberry. Boutte was not yet 21 — the legal age for sports betting in Louisiana — but Fortenberry was.

FanDuel said the account was highly active, with approximately 8,927 bets placed between April 6, 2022, and May 17, 2023. At least 17 bets were placed on NCAA football, including a bet on the LSU game.

There is no evidence Butt punted or threw the game against LSU. But he allegedly bet on himself through player props and parlays. This type of bet revolves around whether a specific player will score a touchdown or gain a specific amount of yards.

After the Louisiana State Police Gambling Enforcement Division Sports Betting Unit received a tip from FanDuel about the potentially illegal account, state investigators obtained a search warrant to view bank records related to the account.

The Fortenberry account was funded solely through a Visa card, which state investigators linked to Boutte's mother, Tanisha Boutte. Police traced the funds and found that 287 transfers were made from one of Kayshon's Visa cards to a Visa card controlled by Tanisha during that period.

Information from FanDuel Sportsbook shows that in 2022, $100,939 was deposited into the “Fortenberry” account. In 2022, the account had $450,969.44 in bets worth KRW 385,597.71. ” The affidavit states.

In 2023, another $31,208.53 was deposited into the “Fortenberry” account, according to FanDuel. Nearly 1,500 bets resulted in $170,675.87 in winnings.

The book was apparently able to recoup much of its losses with further bets. The account had a balance of $0.67 at year-end, although only $50,282.36 was withdrawn in two years, the affidavit states.

Massachusetts Betting Account

Boutte had a successful career at LSU. He appeared in 27 games, starting 21, and finished his three-year career with 131 catches, 1,782 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Boutte skipped his senior year to enter the 2023 NFL Draft and was selected by the Patriots in the sixth round with the 187th overall pick. Shortly after moving to Massachusetts, Butt returned to illegal sports betting, according to FanDuel.

FanDuel compliance officials said Kayshon Boutte opened an online betting account in Massachusetts on June 7, 2023. Butt turns 21 on May 7, 2023. The Visa card that funded the Massachusetts account was the same account linked to Tanisha.

Louisiana prosecutors said a court order led to the disclosure of IP addresses and geolocation data from a Louisiana FanDuel account, showing Butt was the only player on the account. The bets were linked to Boutte's iPhone 13 Pro Max and a wireless IP address provided by Cox Communications, which the company said was linked to an address where Boutte lived.

The investigation revealed that Bout placed bets on several LSU games he attended, including the Tigers' game against Florida State on Sept. 4, 2022, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
