A massive fraud? - Former Barça athlete accused of sending his twin brother.
There's a possible deception creating buzz in Romania, with ex-professional football player Edgar Ié (29) allegedly being replaced by his twin brother Edelino in the field. Ié joined relegation-prone first division team Dinamo Bucharest in February.
Soon after, the club reportedly grew suspicious. The suspected Ié, who had previously played in Turkey, Spain, France, and Holland, was unable to communicate in English, although he claimed to be the real deal.
Romanian journalist Emanuel Rosu shares that Dinamo requested the player present his driver's license, but he refused.
The potential impostor situation is currently under investigation.
Florin Prunea, a former Bucharest goalkeeper, finds the whole scenario hard to believe. "I can't fathom how this could happen," he expressed. "I spoke on the phone with friends and asked some politicians. No one denied it. He does have a twin brother who's also a footballer."
If the deception is confirmed, Bucharest might face repercussions. In the five games where Edelino is said to have taken the place of Ié, Dinamo collected eight points.
A source from the Romanian Football Federation spoke to the Romanian media outlet "iAMSport": "There's no precedent or scenario for this situation. If the player who played wasn't the genuine one, then sanctions may emerge. A DNA test can ultimately verify the truth."
Edgar Ié's past includes time with Guinea-Bissau, development in Sporting Lisbon's youth ranks, a stint in Barcelona's second team, and a debut on December 3, 2014, under Luis Enrique's (54) coaching, followed by his departure from the club in 2015.
Edelino also embarked on a career at Sporting before joining Tluchowia Tluchow in Poland. Now, both could be embroiled in a significant scam.
