German football league - Following 16 accomplished years, Schalke's Jantschke bids farewell to professional football.
Another beloved Borussia Mönchengladbach player, Tony Jantschke, is hanging up his cleats this summer. Jantschke, who has been a professional with the club for 16 years, shared the news on Instagram Tuesday. The 34-year-old defender will still be involved with the club, transitioning to a role on the coaching team to help develop young talent.
With an impressive 301 competitive appearances (scoring five goals) under his belt, Jantschke has spent his entire professional career with Gladbach. Joining the team as a youth academy player from FV Dresden-Nord at the age of 16, he made his Bundesliga debut in 2008 under the guidance of coach Hans Meyer. Gladbach fans have admired his combative style of play, which earned him the nickname "soccer god."
In his announcement on Instagram, Jantschke shared his thoughts on his time as a player for Borussia, "I've always tried to be genuine, true to myself, and give my all on the pitch. Of course, this is reflected in my performances, which have seen their share of highs and lows over the years, including surgeries and recovery times." Jantschke has only played three times this season.
Borussia Mönchengladbach sports director Roland Virkus commented on Jantschke's plans after his retirement, stating, "Tony will be part of the coaching team at Borussia, where he will oversee top talents in the professional squad and support the youth training center."
