SG Flensburg-Handewitt, a team from the German Handball Bundesliga, has advanced to the final tournament of the European League. They won their quarter-final match against IK Sävehof of Sweden, despite losing at home 28:29 on Tuesday. The finals will be held in Hamburg on May 25th and 26th.
The star players for SG during this game were Johannes Golla, Simon Pytlick, and Johan Hansen, who each scored five goals. Alexander Westby scored five times for IK Sävehof as well.
The Swedes started off strong, with a 4:1 lead in the seventh minute. After the visiting team increased their lead to 7:3 in the tenth minute, SG coach Nicolej Krickau called a timeout and spoke forcefully to his players. Hansen managed to tie the score at 9:9 in the 22nd minute, but the deficit had widened again by the end of the first half.
After the break, IK Sävehof increased their lead to five goals (17:12/33). However, their strength faded as the game progressed. Golla, the pivot for SG, and Pytlick, their backcourt player, took over. Pytlick helped the North Germans take their first lead of the game at 22:21 in the 49th minute, but it wasn't enough to win against the determined Swedes. The draw for the semifinals will be held in Hamburg on Friday.
